This course will apply basic structural analysis of music and the art of listening as
avenues to a better understanding of cultural traditions in multiple cultures and
communities. A sociological approach to music, the student will have a better
understanding of how cultural trends, political views, ethnic identity, rites of passage and
religious rituals resonate with specific musical ideas and how the seemingly "abstract"
language of music can provide us with clues to understand how people of various cultures
conceive the world.
