The course focus is on European art and artists contemporary to the radical student movements of the 1960s, which exploded postwar tensions between traditional societies and new mass cultures. Topics include artists such as Joseph Beuys, VALIE EXPORT, and Gerhard Richter, and movements like Fluxus, Situationism, Nouveau Realisme, Arte povera, and Capitalist Realism. This seminar course is reading intensive. Readings include authors Guy Debord, Pierre Restany, and many artists’ writings. Prerequisites: Intro to Modern Arts, HAAVC 2000.
