Description/ Introduction
The purpose of this class is to prepare you for and assist/ coach you through the process of writing your MFA thesis. Your primary goal this fall is to complete your written thesis so you can focus on your studio work in the second semester.
Understanding and engaging with relevant ideas, practices and/or contemporary issues have all become increasingly important for artists. The written thesis is intended to support your success in the art world of your choice. I am committed to helping you create a document that will be of practical as well as theoretical value—not only helping you to ground your work in ideas and find a community of like-minded artists and other makers but do other things as well. Maybe a part of your thesis will serve as an introduction of your work to galleries or curators, whether online or in person. It might be integrated into an application for a job or become the core material for your first “visiting artist” lecture. And of course, it will help you to write a cogent statement about your practice and be able to talk about your work more articulately.
Above all, I want this process to help you gain a greater understanding of your own ideas. Maybe push them forward. It is for you, not me. Never lose sight of this and please consider what will serve you best.
NOTE: ALL documents submitted to me must be in an editable format (not a PDF), preferably in Word, titled with student name (and draft number if applicable).
