Dear faculty,

We hope your semesters are going well.

We'd like to invite you to register for the following new pedagogy workshops offered by our Instructional Designers, Mingyu Li and Adrian Applin.

Designing Effective Learning Activities: The Challenges and Opportunities of Online Discussion Forums

Wednesday, April 19⋅10:00 – 11:00am PDT

Presenter: Mingyu Li, Ph.D., Instructional Designer, CCA Libraries

Topics Covered: Discussion forums are a staple asynchronous online learning activity across disciplines, yet college students often perceive them as “boring,” “uncreative,” and “a waste of time.” In response to this phenomenon, this workshop will first introduce universal strategies and factors to consider in designing effective learning activities and then delve into the challenges and opportunities of designing and implementing asynchronous online discussion forums, empowering instructors to evaluate and improve their own learning activity designs.

Instructional Analysis: Building Blocks of Effective Teaching

Wednesday, April 26⋅10:00 – 11:00am PDT

Presenter: Adrian Applin, Instructional Designer, CCA Libraries
Topics Covered: The instructional analysis process is a great method for analyzing goals and identifying the specific skills and knowledge needed to achieve them. This process can help instructors define clearer goals and more effectively teach students with a diverse variety of skill levels. In this workshop, faculty will be introduced to the theory behind instructional analysis and participate in hands-on activities to explore how to apply these principles to their own courses.

In addition, other workshops that highlight CCA’s Teaching & Learning technologies are also being added regularly throughout the semester for faculty, covering a range of topics such as VoiceThread, MURAL, Zoom, and more. Check out the Teaching Lab Calendar to see these offerings!

Please reach out with any questions, feedback, or suggestions! We'd love to hear from you.
