This course will focus on the landscape, writing, ecology, and art of the North. How can we connect with this very special place on the planet, and what can we learn by studying it? Why might it be important for us, as writers, artists, and designers, to be aware of the current state of our Arctic and SubArctic regions? We will investigate and respond to the work of such contemporary artists as dg nanouk okpik, Billy-Ray Belcourt, Leanne Simpson, Ron Riekki, and Zacharias Kunuk. We will learn about contemporary grassroots movements like the Herring Protectors, based in Sitka, Alaska. Through many different modes of writing and reading, we will explore how we might connect with the Arctic in a responsible way to make art that matters.
