This class is about more than glaze. The intention is to expand your library of techniques for finishing ceramic art, AND to incorporate sustainability into your practice. From the very beginning we will design and produce test tiles, which are a critical component of testing and experimentation, that will be used as individual units of a singular large scale work of art. Your test tiles will be repurposed as parts of your final project, not tossed in the trash as waste.

Can clay, our oldest art medium, be a tool to create current, conceptually relevant work? We will ask this and many other questions in this introductory ceramic sculpture course. With the aid of class discussions, assignments, slide shows, sketching and reading, this course will provide technical skills while exploring the many ways we can use clay to express our concepts. With the added theme of the self-portrait, the student will create works that literally, figuratively, and conceptually explore the many ideas of self-expression and self-reference and relevance.
