This course explores murals as public living spaces, visual geographical multi-layered zones for political activism, expressing cultural identity and liberation, social/cultural awareness and aesthetic advancement. The overarching goal is to inform the students rapidly into the domain in which they will create by bridging two interlocking frameworks, Decolonial and Critical Race Theory (CRT).
All collaborative projects require a shaping of the group conscience towards a singular vital purpose. We ask, what is the purpose and meaning of mural art as it engages public space? How does the individual surrender ego so as to function equitably and collaboratively within a group? How do we shape our vision so to successfully serve our client and to responsibly support the community we are working in?

Telling Stories is an interdisciplinary studio course that explores and examines how art has contributed to the articulation of ethnic identity in this country. The course will focus on the development of collaborative projects and artistic initiatives that involve the community on various levels from process to presentation. It will also offer an opportunity for creative exchange with interactive projects. Visiting community leaders and artists will be invited to present and discuss their work.
