This course is a team-taught survey of the arts from the late 18th century to the present time. Over the course of the semester, three professors will present lectures and lead discussions around the profound transformations within modern culture, including mechanized industry, mass urbanization, individual expression, political pluralism, cultural extremism, the avant garde, globalization, and digital culture. These will be read through several aspects of visual culture, including: painting, sculpture, architecture, design, photography, film, and video. Students will examine what being an “artist” has meant throughout this era while exploring the processes surrounding the formation of artistic canons, and the consequences of exclusion for non-dominant artists/cultures. Intended for second semester first-year students.
