This directing studio workshop provides the student director with a comprehensive practical understanding of the film director’s craft – the language, grammar, and tools of the medium – from the first script reading, to the first day of production. Lectures, discussions, screenings, in class production assignments, and class projects guide students through the process of preparing, shooting, and editing from the perspective of the director. Topics include script analysis, casting, directing the actor, collaborating with the creative team, camera blocking, planning the shot list, camera coverage, photographing the subtext, film grammar, visual composition, the role of music, and sound effects. Students rehearse and stage scenes in a variety of production scenarios, with particular attention paid to working with actors and other key creative personnel in a collaborative production setting.
