This course is an advanced exploration of visual storytelling, specifically using storyboarding and cinematography, professional practices and expectations within a studio production, and discussions around film critique and story iteration. Students should begin with foundational knowledge of story structure, storyboarding techniques, and film language. In this class, we will expand on and improve these concepts to tell more compelling stories. We will explore staging in depth, subtext and thematic visual cues, using improv to generate story ideas and overcome creative blocks, pacing your shots to suit the scene, motivating your cuts and camera angles, and so much more! In this class, you will create portfolio-ready storyboards through three main assignments covering a comedic storyboard, an action storyboard, and a storyboard of a personal experience. We will also have opportunities to discuss senior projects and how to elevate them.
