This generative workshop offers students at all levels the chance to hone their writing skills and explore poetry’s formal possibilities through the lens of disability justice and “crip futurity.” This course examines both overtly disability-focused poetry and performance, and a poetics which inscribes disability through formal innovation and experimentation. We will examine what this poetry can tell us about normative constructions of bodies, being, and belonging and how our experience of the world outside of those constructions informs our poetic vocabularies. Through weekly readings, writing exercises and discussions, students will develop their own poetic practice and complete a chapbook-length collection of their work.
